MEMS based technology increases storage capacity

In a bid to increase memory storage density for hard disc drives used in laptops and pcs, Freescale has introduced its first digital output pressure sensor.
The MPL115A digital sensor is based on mems technology and, according to Freescale, provides high accuracy barometric and altimetry functions for applications such as weather stations, vacuum equipment and medical usage.
The sensor has been designed to communicate on I2C and SPI buses, providing a direct connection to the MCU. Its low profile LGA package of 3 x 5 x 1.2mm enables increased integration, while its low current consumption of 1microamp (sleep mode) and 5microamps (active mode), can assist battery and solar powered applications.
Freescale's vice president and general manager of sensor and actuator solutions, Demetre Kondylis, said: "In an effort to serve our pressure sensor customers in applications such as altimeters, hard disk drives and portable medical equipment, we've delivered an innovative sensor solution that incorporates an easy to use digital interface, small package and low-power operation. The MPL115A digital pressure sensor is available in one of our most compact packages, which helps save board space. And, its power consumption is lower than similar pressure sensors on the market today."
