Nano launch

In a move to address growing demand for ultra low power, small scale fpgas, Actel has launched nano versions of its existing ProAsic 3 and Igloo ranges.
And, as part of the launch, the company is making 50 variants of these parts available for less than $1.
Fares Mubarak, senior vp of engineering and marketing, noted: “The nano range – meaning nano power and small size – fits well in the value based pillar of Actel’s strategy.”
Mubarak noted the markets at which the nano devices are targeted – including smartphones and portable medical devices – are demanding flexibility and rapid time to market. “And they need to meet multiple standards which vary until the last minute,” he added. “It’s not a question of whether there’s a need, it’s whether these developments can meet those demands.”
Mubarak also noted designers are looking for low power and small size. “They assume that you’ll meet the target cost,” he observed “One size doesn’t fit all and pennies matter.”
Power consumption for the new devices – available in densities ranging from 10k to 250k system gates – can be as low as 2µW. Igloo nano parts support 1.2V core and I/O, whilst the Pro Asic3 nano is a 1.5V part. Igloo nano fpgas can be supplied in a 3 x 3mm package, said to be the smallest packge for any programmable device.
Meanwhile, the nano range will also be available in known good die format. Mubarak said there is growing demand for bare die, with some customers assembling these into stacked packages.
