The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded $22million in funding to a new technology innovation program (TIP). The three year initiative will provide advanced manufacturing research in electronics, nanotechnology and biotechnology and is expected to result in a further $46m investment from research partners.

The TIP aims to promote technological innovation by providing funding support to transformative, high risk, high reward research projects that address critical national needs. Nine projects in areas such as electronics, biopharmaceuticals, renewable energy generation and energy storage have been selected from 110 proposals in the 'Manufacturing and Biomanufacturing: Materials Advances and Critical Processes' competition last April. "Keeping our nation's high tech industries at the forefront of innovation is a key component to maintaining and improving US industrial competitiveness in an increasingly competitive world," said Gary Locke, pictured, US Commerce Secretary. "Through these TIP awards, we will help advance cutting edge research in major growth sectors of 21st century manufacturing." The institute aims to share the funding for research projects from single, small or medium sized businesses or joint ventures including higher education institutions, nonprofit research organisations and national laboratories.
