Nokia tops Greenpeace rankings

The 'scorecard' rates manufacturers on criteria such as the reduction of climate impacts of products and operations, responsible recycling and the elimination of toxic materials from products. Nokia attained the same number of 'points' as the previous quarter for activities such as its voluntary take-back programme, which provides 5000 global collection points for end of life mobile phones. Samsung remained in second position for its commitment to reduce absolute emissions, while Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics and Toshiba all moved up two places for providing energy efficient products. However, the report was critical of Sony, stating that it had 'inadequate commitments on eliminating hazardous chemicals', while Dell, Hewlett Packard, and Lenovo lost a point due to their failure to address toxics issues. Fujitsu was cited as having 'no products that are free of hazardous chemicals' and at the bottom of the list was Nintendo which, despite plans to eliminate the use of pvc, has not set a timeline for its phase out.
