Optoelectronics specialist to exploit US patent
Data communications specialist VI Systems has acquired an exclusive license to US patent 8,472,496, which relates to integrating surface emitting lasers and light emitting diodes in any materials system by attaching a dielectric cavity layer, confined by multilayer dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) on both sides of the gain medium.
According to the company, the concept enables trapping and amplification of light, allowing integration of the device to photonic crystals, subwavelength gratings and waveguides. The approach is said to provide high temperature wavelength stability for uncooled dense wavelength division multiplexing applications, along with 'further advantages'.
Berlin based VI Systems, founded in 2006, is a fabless developer and producer of optical engines for data transmission at ultrahigh bit rates and the related electro optic components.
Earlier this year, the company was awarded three US patents to proceed to grant. These new patents cover energy efficient and compact high speed optical interconnects based on its proprietary technology.
