Passive mixers save time, reduce board space
A new development by Analog Devices holds the prospect of reducing design time and complexity in multiband radios. Unveiling the ADL5811 and 5812, the company says the single and dual channel passive mixers deliver unmatched linearity, low distortion and low noise combined with wideband frequency performance.
This, it continues, will enable multiband, single board receiver designs that cover frequencies ranging from 700MHz to 2.8GHz.
Mike Chowkwanyun, product manager within Analog's RF Group, pointed to three design innovations: a wideband local oscillator that generates a high voltage square wave with a fast rise time with no dc current penalty; an integrated programmable rf balun; and a programmable low pass filter for better linearity.
"While designers may be giving up some performance in exchange for the wideband approach," he said, "the parts will be useful in designs where space is constrained and the operator needs a frequency agile radio."
