The global dram market has attained revenue of $4.5billion in the second quarter, up 34% from the $3.4bn in the first quarter.
The data, compiled by market analyst iSuppli revealed that although this rise followed a 19% fall in Q1, the revenue was still down 34% on the same period for 2008.
The report also exposed an 18% increase in the price per megabyte for drams, citing a shortage of dd3 parts and buyers' inventory restocking efforts as the reason.
The top ten list of global dram suppliers for Q2 saw Japan's Elpida Memory as the 'star' performer, with an increase in its pricing pushing its revenue up by 50% from the first quarter. It also posted the strongest performance among the top 5 dram suppliers in Q2, with revenue rising to $745million, up from $497m in Q1.
Nam Hyung Kim, director and chief analyst for memory ics and storage at iSuppli, said: "Elpida accomplished it's strong increases in revenue and pricing by expanding its speciality dram sales to mobile and consumer applications. These speciality drams command higher prices than commodity parts, allowing Elpida to outperform its competitors."
