Quantum cable claimed
Physicists at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) say they have transferred information between two ‘artificial atoms’ via electronic vibrations on a microfabricated aluminum cable. The move is said to demonstrate a new component for potential ultra powerful quantum computers.
The setup resembles a miniature version of a cable television transmission line, but with additional features such as superconducting circuits with zero electrical resistance and multitasking data bits that obey the unusual rules of quantum physics.
NIST believes the resonant cable might be used in quantum computers, which would use quantum behaviour to carry out a range of tasks far more quickly than can be achieved today.
