The LED market is forecast to be the shining light in an otherwise dismal year for the semiconductor industry in 2009, according to market research specialist Isuppli.

The watchdog predicts that LEDs will achieve a revenue increase of 2.9% this year, following 10.8% growth in 2008. In contrast, the report says, the overall semiconductor market is set to decline by 9.4% in 2009.
Isuppli’s senior vice president, market intelligence services, Dale Ford said: “LEDs are forecast for growth this year – a highly unusual item in our semiconductor forecast, given that almost all other companies will suffer revenue contractions in 2009.”
The LCD tv market, Isuppli forecasts, will consume $163million worth of LEDs, up 221.9% from $51m in 2008. By 2012, LCD tv LED revenue is predicted to grow to %1.4billion, nearly nine times more than 2009.
