Renesas launches secure processor in 0.22mm high package
Renesas Electronics has unveiled the first product in its RF20 microcontroller family. The RF21S, which combines near field communications (NFC) and secure element functionality, is intended for use in consumer electronics products.
The RF21S integrates the RS4 secure mcu, an NFC controller and security functions, with support for MIFARE planned for a future upgrade. This single chip configuration is said to eliminate the need for communication with an external secure element. The device also incorporates measures to thwart security threats, such as forgery and tampering. Renesas adds that EMVCo security certification is expected to be obtained shortly.
The RS21S uses Renesas' technology to integrate the elements within a package that is just 0.22mm high.
Renesas says it will add devices to the RF20 series in response to evolving market demand. Such parts are likely to feature larger memories, more peripherals, better performance for high end applications and cost optimised versions for low end applications.
