Samsung brings big.LITTLE to market
Samsung has added the Exynos 5 Octa to its application processor portfolio. The device – said to be the first mobile application processor to implement ARM's big.LITTLE concept – features eight processing cores.
Dr Stephen Woo, pictured, president of the device soluions division of Samsung's System LSI Business, said: "The Exynos 5 Octa introduces a whole new concept in processing architecture, designed for high end smartphones and tablets. When you want multiple applications to perform at their best, you want the best application processor currently available."
The part features four Cortex-A15 cores to handle processing intensive tasks, along with four Cortex-A7 cores for lighter workloads. According to Samsung, the device offers an improvement in energy efficiency of up to 70%, compared to the quad core Exynos.
