The sensor, which measures 15 x 10cm, is not only more economical than previous devices, but also has better radiation resistance.
“In particle physics and cosmology, there are many questions that are still open and to which mankind still has no answer,” said Dr Manfred Krammer, head of CERN’s Experimental Physics Department. “To make new advances in these areas, we need a new generation of particle sensors. Cooperation with high-tech companies like Infineon allows us to develop the technologies we need for that.”
The Infineon sensors are currently being tested in the ATLAS and CMS detectors.
