Smartphones, tablets drive burgeoning motion sensor market
1 min read
The motion sensor market for smartphones and tablets is set to double during the next five years, when global revenue will reach $2.1billion, according to IHS iSuppli.
The market analyst cites the adoption of accelerometer technology in smartphones and tablets – and consumers' fascination with motion sensing capabilities - as the main driver.
The market, which is currently worth $1.1bn, consists of products such as MEMS accelerometers, MEMS gyroscopes, electronic compasses and MEMS pressure sensors. As a result of their usage in tablets and smartphones – the two fastest growing mass market electronics products – IHS forecasts that a total of 4bn motion sensors will ship in smartphones and media tablets in 2015 – up nearly 500% from 864million in 2010.
Jérémie Bouchaud, analyst at IHS, said: "With the increasing variety of different types of sensors used in handsets and tablets, motion based applications are becoming more elaborate, moving beyond screen rotation or map rotation.
The fusion of signals of the various sensors is enabling a description of motion that is much smooth¬er, faster and more precise. Such precision is suited to new applications, including augmented reality, gam¬ing and motion-based web browsing. Ultimately, signals from motion sensors will be blended with data from other sensors in smartphones and tablets, including light sensors, cameras, microphones and global positioning systems."
