The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted in favour of the proposed Sprint and Clearwire merger of its WiMAX businesses.
This will result in unlicensed parts of US television airwaves to deliver broadband services. The proposal, backed by Google, HP and Microsoft, will use the empty airwaves, known as ‘white spaces’ to improve internet access for Americans.
The Clearwire will receive a cash injection of $3.2billion from investers such as Intel, Google, Comcast and Time Warner Cable.
The FCC voted 5-0 vote in favour of the merger and together the company will focus on deploying the first nationwide 4G wireless broadband WiMAX network.
