TDK begins production of first see through QVGA organic EL display
TDK has begun mass production of what it claims to be the world's first see through quarter video graphics array (QVGA) organic EL display.
Formed using thin film techniques, the UEL476 features a 320 x 240 pixel grid and utilises an organic material that emits light in response to an electric current. The Japanese firm says it has a field angle of 2.4in, transmittance of 40% and brightness of 150cd/m2.
The passive matrix see through display is intended for use as the main display panel in mobile phones and other mobile devices. It has been constructed so that the display contents cannot easily be seen from behind to protect the user's privacy.
TDK says development efforts are ongoing, with a view to widen the range to include various colours in the near future.
