Tensions in Korea push chip prices up
As tensions rise at the Korean peninsula, the price trend for multilayer ceramic (mlc) capacitor nand Flash chips has surged throughout the last two weeks.
According to market analyst, inSpectrum, spot price of a 16Gb mlc nand Flash chip increased by 2% to $3.92 within one week. It reports the price of the same architecture 32Gb chips has also risen by 1% to $5.89.
The analyst cites regional tensions in Korea as the major factor behind the price increases. It notes that a number of vendors may have been too conservative about procurement over the past month to avoid unnecessary inventory. The pricing of these mainstream chips in the spot market is reflected accordingly.
The report adds that a number of rush orders have occurred in the market and this has increased the pricing trend this week. The lowest pricing for 32Gb mlc chips rebounded to $4, up from $3.7 last week.
