Transparent display with motion sensor demonstration

Crystal Display Systems has demonstrated a Samsung 22in transparent display in an advertising unit in Casio's Covent Garden store.
The display incorporates a motion sensor to initiate content when a customer approaches. The 'Casio eye' pulses until the user moves closer to the unit, at which point it displays the product and delivers the advertising message.
Relying on ambient light rather than back lighting, the transparent panels are said to consume 90% less electricity than conventional lcd panels. A light metal border holds the device's electronics while hdmi and usb interfaces are also incorporated.
Samsung has started mass production of the 22in transparent panels, available in colour as well as black and white versions. Both feature a contrast ratio of 500:1 and resolution of 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA), with the black and white model sporting what Samsung claims is the world's best transparency rate of more than 20%. The colour model has a transparency rate of more than 15%.
Crystal Displays says applications for this technology are growing and there has been great interest for other promotional scenarios. Potential use beyond point of sale systems includes gaming machines, information points as well as military and medical displays.
