Triple core cpu to boost next generation braking systems
1 min read
Looking to enable the next generation of electronic braking (EBS) and chassis control systems, Freescale and Continental Automotive Systems’ EBS business unit are to design a multicore microcontroller optimised for EBS applications.
The custom mcu, called SPACE, will feature three Power Architecture e200 cores, making it the first triple core automotive mcu.
“The SPACE device is the most powerful, sophisticated automotive mcu in its class,” said Wolfgang Fey, Continental’s director of electronic systems. “Creating a device of such complexity has required close collaboration between Continental and Freescale engineering teams on all technology fronts – silicon design, software tools, simulation and modeling, and hardware platforms. We’re working to develop what we think will be a breakthrough in multicore technology for the automotive industry."
Designed to double the performance of existing MCUs, SPACE contains 3Mbyte of flash, 96Kbyte of sram, FlexRay technology and Continental's fail safe technology, which meets SIL3 requirements.
The device is also said to be suited to a range of fail-safe-critical applications in the chassis control market. The high level of integration also helps reduce system cost, power requirements, component count and board space.
