According to the partners, the optical sensor is 0.3mm thick, light and robust, allowing to be integrated seamlessly into products such as fingerprint scanners, smartcards, mobile phones and wearables. In a further development, the partners have collaborated with fingerprint scanner specialist Green Bit to show the sensor technology is ready for integration into products.
As well as detecting fingerprints, the sensor can capture vein patterns, providing a further level of security, and because large area sensors can be created, the system has the potential to detect prints from five fingers simultaneously.
Chuck Milligan, CEO of FlexEnable, said: “The development of a 500dot/in plastic fingerprint sensor represents a major breakthrough in the commercialisation of flexible fingerprint sensors, paving the way for FBI certification of low cost and flexible fingerprint sensors over large areas.”
