Wireless operated power switch automatically switches off non essential equipment

Derby based Intelligent Distributed Controls (IDC) has launched a smaller version of its energy saving power blocks, the ZB116.

According to the company, it provides a low cost, wireless operated switch with remote power monitoring, which reduces energy consumption by automatically powering down non essential equipment. Applications include lighting, heating, air conditioning and IT data centres. The ZB116 comprises a 240Vac remotely operated switch with real time smart metering in a self contained unit. The device is an intelligent node that can be positioned anywhere in buildings or plant, making system expansion a simple task without the need for physical data buses such as USB and Ethernet cables. It can be installed in walls, ceilings or desk furniture via standard plug and socket connectors provided at each of its ends. Programmable for automatic or remote control, and integrating a pcb with remotely controlled 15amp isolation relay and a wireless smart energy meter, the ZB116 uses the IEEE802.15.4/Zigbee wireless network, enabling up to 100 devices to be connected to a single gateway. As IDC's low power network system provides two way communications, the devices are able to relay each other's traffic and be interrogated remotely, bypassing wired networks completely (a problem with other Wi-Fi networks). The integrated pcb measures the power consumed by the ZB116 socket; it also measures amps, volts, and power factor readings, all of which can be logged in IDC's hosted server by the wireless gateway. This facility enables central analysis of the power that is being consumed by large numbers of the ZB116 units, enabling efficiency comparisons and power savings to be calculated by IDC's Smart Energy Manager. The Web based, Smart Energy Manager enables businesses to audit, monitor and manage energy consumption. This is designed to ensure that more accurate service usage figures are being collected; it also improves accounting charging, reduces costs and increases the accountability of managers to monitor and maintain the services aspects of their assets. The stream of information which can be collected via the wireless system from building facilities across sites is crucial for trending operations to improve on site demand management and increase efficiency.
