Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the availability of a range of new Memory-in-Pixel (MIP) display modules.
Each individual pixel in a MIP display has its own built-in memory, typically a small amount of static RAM. Due to the integrated memory, each pixel in the display can retain its state, colour and brightness, without needing to be continuously refreshed and updated by the display driver hardware. If the display image does not change, the display consumes minimal power to maintain the image.
Power efficiency - one of the biggest advantages of MIP display technology is its power efficiency, making them ideal for applications such as wearable technology, smartwatches, e-readers and other portable, handheld devices where prolonged battery life is required. Since the display only consumes power during the change of state, the overall power consumption is significantly lower than traditional active display technology. Typical power consumption for static images is as low as 5µW. This is therefore particularly beneficial for devices displaying static images over prolonged periods.
Optical performance - MIP displays provide excellent image visibility and readability in almost any ambient lighting environment due to their ability to maintain image quality under various operating conditions. Implementing reflective and transflective display technology, MIP displays are highly visible under direct sunlight, where ambient light is used to enhance the display image. MIP displays deliver excellent optical performance which is essential for applications requiring concise, clear text and graphics.
Colour and refresh rates - available in high-contrast monochrome and 64-colour options, MIP displays can produce highly legible display images. Refresh rates however, are lower than those of other display technologies, making them less suitable for high-speed video but well-suited for static or infrequently changing images.
