Reduce surface-arcing and eliminate post-solder coating in high-voltage applications
1 min read
New ProtectiCap™ MLCC chips significantly reduce surface-arcing in high-voltage applications and eliminate the need for conformal coating after soldering. ProtectiCap's smooth coating delivers a typical 1000V improvement compared to standard MLCC chips, whilst board space is optimised with smaller case sizes, including a 3kV chip in a standard 1206 case. Syfer ProtectiCap™ MLCCs are sampling now from Charcroft.

Sample Request, Data & Application Note
High-voltage discharges, known as surface arcing, arc-overs, flash-overs or corona discharges, can cause interference and component failure by producing a visible spark in addition to electrical noise.
Factors such as humidity, solder balls, flux residue and other contaminants can all contribute to surface-arcing, particularly in MLCCs with higher dielectric constant materials. The layout of the PCB can also increase susceptibility through the use of oversize pads, vias beneath capacitors, buried layers or geometries which prevent effective cleaning.
ProtectiCap™ provides consistent performance advantages with a special coating applied to an optimised high-voltage MLCC. This produces a smooth, sealed finish which allows higher voltages and capacitance values to be achieved in smaller case sizes.
Comprehensive testing has shown an improvement in performance of a minimum of 1000V over standard parts. Standard test methods were based on international specifications including AEC-Q200, IECQ-IECC and MIL standards.
