Silent, fume-free and cheap to operate, the new lithium-based power supply has more than twice the capacity of competing AC power units that use sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries and can run heavy-duty equipment requiring up to a 2kW continuous input.
TWS, the world's third largest manufacturer of lithium battery packs, has developed a new portable AC power supply which offers a 2kW continuous output, suitable for heavy-duty equipment, but which is also light enough to be carried in one hand.
Drawing on patented technology developed by TWS, the new Mobile AC Power Supply benefits from the light weight and high energy density of lithium cells, giving it more than twice the capacity of competing AC power units that use sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries.
Weighing just 20kg and around the size of a carry-on flight bag, the TWS Mobile AC Power Supply provides peak and continuous AC power outputs comparable to that of diesel generators that are bigger and heavier, emit hazardous fumes and have a high operating cost. It is expected to be used to supply a wide range of AC-powered equipment in transportation, medical, entertainment, marine, construction and military applications.
The Mobile AC Power Supply is a patented modular design consisting of a 1.6kWh battery unit and a detachable inverter. This means that when one battery unit has been discharged, the inverter can be removed and attached to a second, fully charged battery unit to provide for continued operation.
This modular design enables the complete battery/inverter unit to be kept to a manageable size and weight that can readily be carried by a single person. In addition, a proprietary battery management system implemented by TWS that optimizes the cell balancing in both charge and discharge modes helps to provide for a long operating life. The battery units carry a manufacturer's warranty of three years, extendable to five years under contract.
Because the Mobile AC Power Supply is silent and generates no fumes, it is also safer and more convenient for use indoors than a diesel generator. Requiring no regular maintenance and charged with cheap mains electricity, its operating cost-per-kWh is around 60% less than that of a diesel-powered generator. Over its lifetime, it offers a substantial reduction in total cost of ownership compared to a generator.
Examples of applications in which the TWS Mobile AC Power Supply can replace a diesel generator include:
• Temporary unmanned monitoring stations
• Remote military outposts
• Emergency services' response teams for emergency lighting, cutting equipment etc
• To provide power in homes or offices during grid black-outs
• Marine ultrasound transmitters
• To power entertainment equipment used at live events
Gordon Clements, VP of Sales (America and Europe) at TWS, said: 'Old-style AC power units with a lead-acid battery simply do not hold enough energy to be used for long periods by heavy-duty equipment requiring as much as 2kW of power. That's why the TWS AC Power Supply, which uses lithium cells, is such a breakthrough – you can use it to run a concrete breaker continuously for an hour with a single battery unit, yet it's small enough for one person to carry it comfortably.'
