It means that USB-C connectors used by Android-based devices will now be an EU standard that will require Apple to change its device charging point.
While the move can be seen as a blow to Apple, analysts believe that the move could actually benefit the company with consumers encouraged to buy the company’s latest products. Other companies to be impacted by the decision include Samsung and Huawei.
CCS Insight’s Ben Wood said the decision was a victory for common sense. “Although Apple has a huge installed base of lightening-cable powered devices, the ubiquity of USB-C across all consumer electronic products means the harmonising on USB-C makes perfect sense.”
According to Bloomberg, Apple is already working on an iPhone with a USB-C charging point and it’s likely that Apple will adopt the USB-C port globally – which will come as relief to consumers who’ve had to switch to different chargers for their devices.
