Twelve small British companies have been selected to make a live pitch at a major event next week for a share of £600,000 of government funding to kickstart the development of new technology.
The Competition for Disruptive Solutions aims to stimulate innovative new ideas in four areas: energy; digital; healthcare; and sustainability. All finalists are guaranteed £25,000 to help take their ideas forward, but those judged to have made the best proposals in each of the four areas will receive £100,000.
The finalists were selected from about 550 businesses who submitted two minute video pitches to the funding competition, managed by the Technology Strategy Board. The finalists will present their ideas to a live audience at the Innovate10 networking and innovation event in London on 12 October.
The finalists in the digital category are: KineticaRT, which plans to develop and field trial a system to monitor the well being of elderly people via low cost, non intrusive sensors; Bare Conductive, which is looking to commercialise a skin safe conductive ink which has the potential to impact markets ranging from flexible printed electronics to sensing interfaces; and Little Riot, which has developed an interactive product which aims to provide 'digital presence'.
Energy finalists are: RE Hydrogen, which is developing a 5kW 1 bar alkaline electrolyser stack for hydrogen production; Oxford Photovoltaics, which is commercialising solar glazing technology that can be printed directly on glass; and Arcola Energy, which is determining the feasibility of using hydrogen fuel cells to power remote offices and outdoor events.
