ADI launches four chips for smart meter sector

Analog Devices has introduced four chips designed to improve the accuracy and performance of commercial, industrial and residential smart meters.
The parts are expected to bring improved billing accuracy, advanced power quality monitoring and reduced operating costs for utility companies to smart meters.
The ADE7878, 7868, 7858, and 7854 are designed for polyphase configurations, including three and four wire, wye and delta services. The parts offer 0.1% accuracy for both active and reactive energy measurements over a dynamic range of 1000:1 and 0.2% accuracy over a dynamic range of 3000:1.
In addition to per phase and neutral energy measurements, the ADE7868 and 7878 can monitor energy quality parameters. Both parts can also detect a range of tampering conditions.
Meanwhile, Energy and Climate Change Minister Lord Hunt has committed the UK to replacing all utility meters with smart devices by 2020. "Smart meters will put the power in people's hands, enabling us all to control how much energy we use, cut emissions and cut bills."
The announcement also includes provision for supplying a standalone display with smart meters to make it easy for consumers to see and understand their energy use and carbon emissions in real time.
