Advantech looks to ride demand for 'internet of things' connectivity

Looking to exploit growing demand for products which support the 'internet of things', Advantech has launched the ADAM-2000Z series of wirless modules. Based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard, the devices use 2.4GHz mesh networking to provide flexibility and cost effective distributed monitoring.
There are six modules in the range, pictured, each powered by two AA alkaline batteries. Power consumption is said to be low enough to allow data to be updated at one minute intervals for a year before the batteries need to be replaced.
The move is part of a larger strategy in which Advantech is rolling out intelligent systems and solutions to the global market. Part of the attraction is the growth in demand: reports claim the market will more than double in 2012.
Advantech's approach for the UK is to develop hardware and software for the major sectors in which it is engaged in collaboration with Microsoft, Intel and appropriate channel partners.
"Intel is leading the intelligent systems transformation with much of our technology already woven into the fabric of our daily lives, from retail kiosks to intelligent telecommunications networks," said Simon Wilyman, EMEA director, channel and broadmarket, embedded sales group. "By working closely in collaboration, Advantech can develop first to market embedded solutions across multiple segments, including digital signage, healthcare and industrial."
