Altera uses Enpirion tech for power optimised reference designs

Five months after its acquisition over Enpirion, Altera has announced the first implementation of its technology in the shape of power optimised reference designs based on the Cyclone V SoC.
Mark Davidson (pictured), marketing director of Altera's power business unit, said: "Every fpga requires power and the first thing we are doing is power optimised reference designs. It has allowed us to do some optimisation that we couldn't do before. Enpirion has some core technologies that are state of the art."
In Davidson's opinion: "Customers don't want to spend time on the power supply. The power supply adds nothing but, potentially, can take a lot away. We are helping customers spend more time on the fpga and speed time to market."
Four new reference designs have been launched in total. Altera claims they increase power efficiency by up to 30%, reduce board area by up to 50%, and reduce overall bom bulk capacitance costs by up to 50% compared to competing power solutions.
Other reference designs for Stratix, Arria and Cyclone families will be launched shortly.
