ARM and Oracle to further develop Java, targeting M2M

ARM has signed a multiyear agreement with Oracle under which it will optimise Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) for ARM 32bit platforms and add Java SE support for ARMv8 64bit platforms. The companies have been collaborating since 1996, when ARM helped to port JavaOS to the ARM architecture.
The collaboration will focus on delivering throughput and efficient scalability for ARM based multicore systems. It is said by the companies to benefit emerging applications in industrial control, factory automation and single board computers, as well as M2M in general.
"The long standing relationship between ARM and Oracle has enabled our mutual technologies to be deployed across a broad spectrum of products and applications," said Henrik Stahl, Oracle's vice president for Java Product Management. "By working closely with ARM to enhance the Java Virtual Machine, adding support for 64bit ARM technology and optimising other aspects of Java SE for the ARM architecture, enterprise and embedded customers can reap the benefits of high performance, energy efficient platforms."
Ian Drew, ARM's chief marketing officer and executive vice president for business development, added: "This extended relationship with Oracle to enhance Java SE is an important step in growing the ARM ecosystem."
