CES 2012: £70 tablet could provide every child with access to education

The prototype of a low cost, low power tablet computer will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) from January 10 to 13, Las Vegas.
Integrated silicon specialist, Marvell Semiconductor, has worked in collaboration with non profit organisation, One Laptop per Child, in a bid to help every child in the world gain access to a modern education. According to both companies, the plans is to sell the XO 3.0 tablet at under £70, although this will vary depending on configuration and volume of orders.
The XO 3.0 uses the Marvell ARMADA PXA618 SoC processor - which is designed to enables a significant decrease in power consumption – and Avastar Wi-Fi SoC.
Tom Hayes, vice president of Corporate Marketing at Marvell, said: "Marvell is committed to improving education – and the human condition – around the world through innovative technology for Smartphones, tablets and a myriad of new cloud delivered services. "Partnering with One Laptop per Child is one way we can deliver a revolution where it matters most – to benefit children in some of the poorest places on the planet." According to Hayes, the companies intend to provide meaningful educational opportunities to the 500million school aged children around the world.
The XO 3.0 has unique charging circuitry and is the only tablet that can be charged directly by solar panels, hand cranks and other alternative power sources.
