Collaboration targets millimetre waves for mobile comms
1 min read
InterDigital and Blu Wireless Technology have completed the first phase of a collaborative project which is exploring millimetre wave solutions for small cell base stations and access points.
Henry Nurser, pictured, ceo of wireless baseband system IP specialist Blu Wireless, said: "This project builds on a previous collaboration with InterDigital. The combination of the two research teams will enable a significant advance in the application of low cost millimetre wave technology within the 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure markets and result in innovative system solutions for our customers."
The partners are expected to produce a demonstration platform that will not only allow operators to see how the technology might enable them to increase 4G and 5G backhaul rates, but also to explore 5G millimetre wave mobile access. This platform will combine InterDigital's multihop backhaul technology with Blu Wireless' HYDRA baseband evaluation platform.
Jim Nolan, executive vice president of wireless R&D company InterDigital, added: "We have been impressed by the flexibility shown by the HYDRA System IP and excited by its potential. I look forward to a next phase of research focused on the technical challenges associated with 4G small cell backhaul and 5G networks."
