CSR buys Belfast based audio compression specialist

CSR has bought Belfast based APT Licensing in a move which will allow the latter's apt-x low latency audio compression codecs to be integrated more tightly with CSR's next generation audio products.
APT specialises in audio compression solutions which retain the full integrity of the digital audio and which are optimised for instant real time audio streaming. Its apt-x suite has been proven in wireless, broadcast and professional live performance applications. The apt-x algorithm is said to be particularly suited to Bluetooth.
Joep van Beurden, CSR's ceo, said: "CSR is buying one of the industry's strongest audio IP portfolios and a 20 year heritage in audio expertise. Closer integration of APT's IP with our own technologies will expand the market for its technology to more mainstream consumers and enable us to realise benefits that neither party could achieve independently."
APT has been working on the development of scalable codecs that can be adapted for specific acoustic environments, battery life savings, latency and error resilience. CSR believes this approach has great promise and may allow fully adaptive audio platforms to be developed.
"We're very proud of what APT has achieved over the last 20 years and are delighted to be joining CSR in what is a very positive step towards the increased proliferation of the high quality codecs, into broader mobile and wireless consumer applications," said Noel McKenna, APT's ceo, pictured. "I see a very exciting future ahead."
