Europe claims nanotechnology spending lead
The European Union is the world’s largest funding agency for nanotechnology, with €1.4billion allocated to 550 projects. According to EU figures, its funding accounts for one third of European public spending on nanoscience and nanotechnology.
“Nanotechnology is an area where Europe is an acknowledged world leader,” said the EU’s Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik (pictured). “This is an opportunity we must grasp with both hands.”
The €1.4bn has been allocated as part of the EU’s Sixth Research Framework program. Under the Seventh Framework, EC funding for nanotechnologies and nanosciences is expected to increase significantly – potentially doubling the current spend.
