First hybrid set top box launched
Chinese firm EKT has created a hybrid set top box that plugs directly into the mains power.
The DIP5026 is a PowerPlug style device with built-in Wi-Fi and RF4CE remote reception.
"We were inspired to come up with a radical new idea for a set top box after being asked by some major operators for a dongle type solution" said EKT ceo Richard Smith. "We knew the limitations of the power and form factors of the HDMI dongles and needed to come up with something that would fit with every TV set."
The DIP5026 is aimed at flat panel TV sets. It comes with EKT's proprietary solidTV software, which is compliant with the latest HTML5 and HbbTV 1.5 standards and supports the major CA, DRM and streaming formats.
