Freescale addresses data centre security applications

Freescale has unveiled a range of security accelerators designed to help data centre equipment manufacturers handle growing demand for secure network traffic.
The C29x crypto coprocessor family is said to enable multichip, single PCI-Express card solutions. The parts are designed around a Power Architecture e500-v2 core and feature a range of accelerators to handle security issues.
Devices in the range can deliver more than 120,000 RSA 2048 operations/s and are said to offer more than three times the performance of similar parts.
"Internet traffic security requirements are increasingly stringent and complex, yet the security coprocessor market is currently served by few vendors. Customers are asking us for high performance, cost and power efficient choices for coprocessors," said Tareq Bustami, vice president of Product Management for Freescale's Digital Networking group.
The C29x family is said to offer scalability in power and performance. The family is designed to accelerate RSA (up to 4k key sizes), Diffie Hellman and Elliptical Curve Cryptography algorithms and can perform bulk data encryption at rates of up to 10Gbit/s.
