GaN researcher knighted in Queen's Birthday Honours list
Professor Colin Humphreys, Professor of Materials Science and Director of Research in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, has been awarded a knighthood for services to Science in the Queen's Birthday Honours. He said: "I am delighted with this news which reflects the importance of science to our society."
Sir Colin founded and directs the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride. According to the Centre, GaN is probably the most important semiconductor material since silicon. It emits brilliant light as well as being the key material for next generation high frequency, high power transistors capable of operating at high temperatures.
The Centre, based in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy , is one of only a few establishments to have access on the same site to GaN growth equipment, electron microscopy characterisation facilities, xray diffraction characterisation facilities, atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence for measuring optical properties.
