Internet enabled augmented reality glasses that let users take pictures, get directions and place video calls could soon be on the way thanks to a new project underway at Google X - Google's futuristic technology development lab.
Photos and a video of the new technology were posted on the company's social networking site today, where the wearer is seen checking the weather forecast, surfing the web and 'checking in' at various lcoations - all of which is done using voice activated icons that appear in the user's field of vision.
The prototype glasses are part of a two year initiative called Project Glass. Android software, motion sensors, GPS navigation and a 3G or 4G data connection are thought to be included in the device's capabilities.
A statement released today by three Google X team leaders read: "A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment.
"We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do."
Reports have suggested that the glasses will be made available as early as 2013, although no official released date has been given.
