Infineon Technologies is to expand its production site in Villach to enable the development of expertise for future manufacturing, as well as for R&D. The move will see an investment of €290million and the creation of 200 jobs.
Sabine Herlitschka, CEO of Infineon Technologies Austria, said: "Villach is reinforcing its important role as a factory of innovation and a competence centre for power electronics. We're making an important contribution to the success of the company by coupling the innovation factory in Villach with volume production in Dresden, using the example of 300mm thin wafer production for power semiconductors."
In the project, called Pilot Space Industry 4.0, Infineon will build a complex to support research, production and measurement technology, whilst expanding existing logistics, infrastructure and plant equipment. According to Infineon, this will allow it to mobilise productivity and automation, whilst increasing flexibility.
The move is part of the German government's Industry 4.0 initiative, which targets the intelligent factory of the future. Infineon says it has been engaged in the initiative from the beginning and adds the pilot operation in Villach will feature production based on a cyber physical system with the latest production control and automation systems.
