Intel earmarks $300million for Ultrabook development
Intel has announced plans to invest $300million in companies that develop new technologies for Ultrabooks, a class of thin and light laptops promoted as an alternative to tablet pcs.
"Ultrabook devices are poised to be an important area for innovation in the $261billion global computer industry," said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and Intel's executive vice president. "The Intel Capital Ultrabook fund will focus on investing in companies building technologies that will help revolutionise the computing experience and morph today's mobile computers into the next 'must have' device."
To help realise that vision, the new capital will be used, over the next three to four years, to invest in companies developing hardware and software in areas such as sensors and touch, longer battery life, thinner designs and improved storage capacity.
The company's push for Ultrabooks is part of its larger plan to rejuvenate interest in the pc market, which has witnessed declining sales in recent months following the burgeoning popularity of tablet devices.
