Intel to expand in Sophia Antipolis?
With two new R&D centres in the area focusing on technology for mobile applications, Intel may be set to expand rapidly in Sophia Antipolis, the telecoms research community in the South of France.
Intel is recruiting strongly and the recent acquisition of Infineon's wireless business is likely to give it an extra boost. Speaking at the recent Sophia Antipolis Microelectronics Forum, Thierry Cammal, pictured, director of the company's Ultra Mobility Group in France, confirmed the talent pool was a major attraction, as is the potential for collaboration with the local Pôle de Compétitivité SCS.
Cammal sees the 4G/LTE and M2M Telecom Platform for mobile infrastructure and networking project, recently placed at the Pôle SCS, as a welcome opportunity. "Intel needs to get into that business. We will be collaborating. There's a huge advantage in getting everything tested locally," he said. "There will be a convergence of platforms."
