Intelligent in vehicle technologies hit the road

A European-wide research project has seen the automotive sector collaborate with universities and research centres to test hi-tech intelligent in vehicle technologies on roads with real drivers.
The euroFOT project comprises 28 organisations to scientifically test and assess the impact of eight advanced assistance systems on safety, efficiency and comfort. Tests will include lateral and longitudinal control systems, which can warn drivers on potential side and front end collisions, as well as other advanced in vehicle systems such as curve speed warning, fuel efficiency adviser and navigation human / machine interaction systems.
This is the first time a large scale field operational test has been carried out across European brands and is being conducted to raise awareness and provide indications based on scientific data on existing intelligent in vehicle systems.
Maxime Flament from Ertico – ITS Europe, responsible for the coordination of the vehicles centres, said: "Car dealers and fleet owners across Europe are currently recruiting the drivers that will take part in this experiment. At the same time, the vehicle operation centres are getting ready to prepare each vehicle for a one year long advanced data collection."
