Japanese giant collaborates with UK university

Japanese electronics giant Murata Manufacturing has announced it is to collaborate on nanotechnology research with the University of Manchester.

The deal has been organised with help from the Northwest Regional Development Agency and was the result of two years' of discussions and investigations. Prof Paul O'Brien, head of the university's Inorganic Materials, will lead the research team. He said: "I very much welcome this collaboration with Murata, which provides access to skills and equipment in Japan and training for a Japanese scientist in some leading edge aspects of nanotechnology in my laboratories." Murata employs 33,000 staff worldwide and is the world's largest electronics manufacturer.
