LED breakthrough increases beam angle range to 220°

An led lighting manufacturer claims to have made advances in the research and development of led lighting products that enable 'unparalleled' uniformity of light and wider beam angles than conventional devices.
Taiwan based Gem Hsin Electronics says its patented design achievements are 'unmatched' in the led industry, requiring 20% less energy than competitors and extending led life to 399,999hours. The company has already started incorporating the technology in its line of T5/T8 led tube lights, pictured.
According to Gem Hsin, its engineers have made significant breakthroughs in reducing the size of the heat sinks needed in its led products. Using laser precision technology, extremely small holes are drilled beneath each led, creating direct paths for heated air to escape to the heat sink. While this improvement is small, it means that leds can stay cooler, improving efficiency and lifespan, and require less heat sink mass for thermal optimisation.
The company claims that this design breakthrough enables it to offer lighting products that have wide beam angles of up to 220°, compared to common current angles of 180°. As a result of the wider beam angles, Gem Hsin says its led lighting products provide more natural led light.
Gem Hsin has also developed a new way to position leds into tube lights. Whereas many led manufacturers use a single row of leds in tube lights, Gem Hsin is implementing a design that it says increases uniformity and quality of light by using two, staggered rows of leds. This method is said to reduce uneven light and produce the same natural light along the entire length.
Herman Chang, ceo of Gem Hsin, said: "These innovations combine to produce remarkably even and natural illumination. We are really excited to be able to provide a more comfortable, a more productive living and working environment for users of our unique and top of the line products."
