LG creates rollable TV panel
LG Display has developed an 18in flexible OLED that can be rolled into a tube of radius 3cm, as well as a transparent 18in OLED panel. The flexible OLED panel has a resolution of 1200 x 810 pixels and can be rolled without affecting the function of the display. In the future, the company believes it will be possible to make rollable TVs with screen sizes of more than 50in.
"We are confident that, by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60in, which will have transmittance of more than 40% and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market." said In-Byung Kang, senior vice president and head of LG Display's R&D Centre.
The display is based on a high molecular substance based polyimide film, rather than conventional plastic. As well as enabling the tight curvature, the polyimide film also allows for reduced panel thickness.
The transparent OLED panel boasts a transmittance of 30%, rather than the current 10%, and LG says 'haze' – generated by the integral components – has been reduced to 2%.
