In a surprise move away from the motorsport sector, Lord Drayson has shifted his focus to the wireless energy market, forming a new venture with Imperial College London.
The new enterprise, called Drayson Wireless, builds upon Drayson Racing's expertise in the use of wireless power in automotive applications. The aim is to develop and commericalise new transfer technologies for a range of sectors.
"Over recent years we have seen a revolution in the way wireless technology has transformed communications, making smartphones and social media part of our everyday lives," Lord Drayson said. "The same is about to happen to energy and Drayson Wireless aims to be at the centre of this next revolution."
The academic founders of Drayson Wireless are made up of scientists from Imperial's Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. The board also includes senior level representatives from the likes of Qualcomm, PowderJect and Circassia.
According to a statement, launching the new company has led Lord Drayson to 'restructure his interests'. As such, a new holding company, Drayson Technologies, has acquired the business and assets of Drayson Racing Technologies LLP and its Formula E team.
