Microchip pushes PIC32 family to new levels
1 min read
Responding to demand from embedded system designers for more powerful microcontrollers with lower cost and complexity, Microchip has expanded its PIC32 family with the addition of the PIC32MZ range.
The new devices are said to provide three times the performance and four times as much memory as previous parts.
There are 24 variants in the PIC32MZ embedded connectivity family, which is based on the MIPS microAptiv core. This brings 159 new instructions that speed the execution of dsp algorithms by using up to 75% fewer cycles than PIC32MX parts. Also featured is the microMIPS instruction set architecture, which improves code density by up to 30%.
The 200MHz core has a five stage pipeline, along with instruction and data caches. PIC32MZ parts feature up to 2Mbyte of dual panel flash, up to 512kbyte of ram and a range of connectivity options.
The parts also come with a 28Msample/s 12bit a/d converter that can be configured with up to 48 channels. A high speed bus matrix provides access to memory, connectivity and the data converter, while there are also seven peripheral buses
Data security issues are addressed with an optional integrated hardware crypto engine with a random number generator for data encryption/decryption and authentication using a range of techniques.
"Our PIC32MZ family was designed for high end and next generation embedded applications that require high levels of performance, memory and advanced peripheral integration," said Rod Drake, director of Microchip's MCU32 division.
"The PIC32MZ enables designers to add features such as improved graphics displays, faster real-time performance and increased security with one mcu, lowering both cost and complexity."
Three PIC32MZ development tools are available: a turn key Starter Kit is priced at $119, which comes in two versions to support devices with without the integrated crypto engine; the Multimedia Expansion Board II; and a Starter Kit Adapter that works alongside Microchip's application specific daughter boards.
Depending on feature set, the devices will be available in a choice of 64pin qfn, 64pin tqfp, 100pin tqfp, 124pin vtla, 144pin tqfp and 144pin lqfp packages.
