Microchip ups 16bit dsc/mcu performance to 60 MIPS

Microchip has announced the launch of its 60 MIPS, 16bit digital signal controllers and PIC24 microcontrollers.
Based on the next generation core, the 60 MIPS dsPIC33 and PIC24 'E' devices are said to feature more memory and higher integration compared to dsPIC dscs and PIC24 mcus with the previous generation core.
This includes 536KB of flash memory, 52KB of ram, greater I/O capability with 144pin packages, usb 2.0 OTG interface and expanded motor control. Other features include improved graphics and audio and real time embedded control capabilities.
To support the first nine dsPIC33 and PIC24 'E' devices, Microchip has launched two usb starter kits and five plug in modules. These are optimised for use with its multimedia expansion board, motor control development kits and Explorer 16 development platforms. 30 software libraries and application notes are also available on topics such as speech and audio, encryption/decryption, communications, and motor control.
Microchip's dsPIC33E dscs and PIC24E mcus are fully compatible with the existing portfolio of dsPIC33F dscs, PIC24H/PIC24F mcus, software libraries and tools. The new usb 2.0 'on the go' peripheral is designed to enable a connection to a pc, flash drive and other usb enabled devices. The 60 MIPS performance is optimised to allow new devices to support high end industrial and commercial applications such as servo motor control, solar inverters, and running dual 3phase motors in parallel.
A new, independent pwm mode supports multiple stepper motors and dead time compensation, which is said to reduce software overhead. Three on-chip analogue comparators are designed to further reduce system cost as well as the number of external components required.
