Microsoft has outlined the next phase in its Windows Embedded Business strategy. The road map outlines the renaming of its family of products and plans for new solutions in key device categories.
New key device category solutions will be offered under the Windows Embedded Ready name and will ship as preconfigured toolkits. This, says the company, will provide device makers with market specific features that will enable them to build and ship connected, service oriented devices.
“With today’s strategic road map announcement, our aim is to present the evolving Windows Embedded product family in an intuitive fashion, making it easier for our customers to choose the right platforms and tools for their needs,” said Kevin Dallas, general manager of Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Business.
The first product to be released under the new strategy will be Windows Embedded Standard – the next generation of Windows XP Embedded – on June 3. Current Windows Embedded products will be retain their names until their next scheduled product release.
The Windows Embedded family of products includes: Windows Embedded Standard, the next generation of Windows XP Embedded; Windows Embedded Compact, the next generation of Windows Embedded CE scheduled for 2009; Windows Embedded Enterprise, currently comprising Windows Vista and Windows XP for Embedded Systems; and Windows Embedded POSReady, the new name for Windows Embedded for Point of Service and scheduled for upgrade in 2009.
