Mountaineers bring mcu technology to summit of Kilimanjaro
Two employees of Microchip and Future Electronics engaged in a practical exercise to take extremely low power tracking devices to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Microchip engineering intern Tim Moffat built the devices which tracked Microchip's Darren Wenn and Future's Chris McAneny's locations via GPS while continuously taking measurements such as temperature and barometric pressure. The devices operated for the duration of the climb on two Lithium AA batteries and are based on Microchip's 8bit PIC18LF14K50 microcontroller.
System components include a GPS receiver, a barometer and a temperature sensor, which are used to log altitude, latitude, longitude, UTC time, barometric pressure and temperature.
