IMEC has invested €70million in a project to expand its laboratories to 2800m².
The expansion will allow the Belgian nanoelectronics research institute to increase its research on 22nm cmos, high efficiency solar cells and biomedical electronics.
The extra lab space includes a 1200m² clean processing area as well as 1600m² of new lab space to extend research on silicon and organic solar cells and biomedical electronics.
The venture comprised an investment of €35m from the Flemish government, with IMEC covering the remaining monies through a loan. As a result of the expansion, IMEC expects to create about 300 jobs.
IMEC's ceo, Gilbert Declerck (pictured), said: "Thanks to the unbridled commitment of our researchers and the continuous vision and support of the government of Flanders, we succeeded in putting Flanders on top of the world in nanoelectronics research. We are proud that we can further expand IMEC's activities so that we continue to offer valuable research and development programmes to the industry that will contribute to Flanders, Europe and the world of tomorrow."
